How It All Started

I was eight years old when I stepped off a plane in Boston, and everything felt different.

The accents, the culture, the sheer thrill of being somewhere completely new. I didn’t realise it then, but that wide-eyed kid staring out an aeroplane window was hooked.

For years, travel meant occasional trips around Europe, nothing extraordinary, just the typical wanderings of someone who hadn’t yet discovered what travel could truly become.

The Turning Point

Then I moved to Washington, D.C.

For over a year, I worked as an Accounting Associate at a large construction company, navigating office politics and spreadsheets. It was fine. Comfortable, even. But something was missing.

A couple of years later, I found myself in Nairobi, volunteering with an NGO dedicated to ending human trafficking. It wasn’t comfortable. It wasn’t easy.

But it opened my eyes to what happens when you truly immerse yourself in a different culture, when you step outside your comfort zone and let the world change you.

When Everything Changed

Back in Ireland, I watched the rain fall. And fall. And fall some more.

Then came the pandemic. Lockdowns. More rain. More lockdowns. I realised I was waiting for permission to live the life I actually wanted.

So in 2023, I stopped waiting.

I packed my bags and spent months travelling through Southeast Asia, Central Asia, India, and Turkey. It wasn’t just a trip; it was a reset. I made memories I’ll carry forever, met people who changed how I see the world, and returned home a fundamentally different person.

I couldn’t stay away.

In 2024, I spent another five months exploring Thailand and Indonesia, diving deeper into pristine islands, ancient cities, and hidden corners that most travellers miss. That’s when I knew for certain: Southeast Asia isn’t just amazing, it’s the most incredible region on Earth.

A further three months in Vietnam, and I am falling more and more in love with this part of the world by the day.

Why This Blog Exists

I started blogging about various topics over the years, but in 2021, I made a decision: faheyjamestravel would be dedicated entirely to helping travellers like you.

When I planned my 2023 trip, I discovered incredible blogs that made everything easier, from finding hidden gems to avoiding tourist traps. I remember thinking: “I could help people like this.”

So that’s what I’m doing.

This blog is built on real experience, honest recommendations, and the kind of practical advice you actually need when you’re standing in a foreign train station, wondering which ticket to buy.
