Best Time To Visit Koh Lipe And What I’d Do Differently (2026)
What Nobody Tells You About Timing A Trip To Koh Lipe
When is the best time to visit Koh Lipe?
The official answer is the dry season, running from November to April. I went in September anyway.
I’ll be honest, I nearly wrote this island off after two days of solid rain turned the jungle paths into rivers and the sky into one flat grey sheet. But then the clouds cleared, and for four days straight I got the kind of light that makes you understand why people quit their jobs over a beach.
That’s the trouble with giving travel advice based on a single trip. I spent almost a week on Koh Lipe, and the honest answer is that my visit was two very different islands wearing the same postcode. On the sunny days, it was easily one of the most beautiful places I have been. On the rainy ones, it felt more like being stuck in a very damp jungle than lounging on the Andaman coast everyone raves about.
So if you’re trying to work out when to go, without landing in the busiest crowds or the wettest weeks, I want to save you the guesswork I didn’t have. This post is for the solo travellers and couples chasing that island fantasy, the ones who would rather plan around the weather than leave it to chance.
A place this beautiful deserves better odds than a coin flip.

Dry Season – The Best Time
It may seem obvious, but the dry season brings the best opportunities for a perfect trip to Koh Lipe.
When the weather is good in Lipe, it looks like paradise. The beach is brighter. The water is more transparent. The people smile more.
We were in the shoulder period in September where we experienced a mix of great weather and days with plenty of rain.
But if you need cloudless skies and pristine water that you dreamed of then the best time to visit is the cool and dry season.
During the dry season, Koh Lipe experiences perfect temperatures normally ranging between 24°C (75°F) and 32°C (90°F). In December 2023, the island recorded average daytime highs of 31°C (88°F) and nighttime lows of 25°C (77°F).
The humidity isn’t too bad during this time, it stays between 70-80%, which means you can actually enjoy walking around and exploring without feeling like you’re in a sauna.
The water temperature is a lovely 28°C (82°F), making it perfect for taking a dip or going for a swim.
| Month | Average High | Average Low | Water Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 32°C (90°F) | 24°C (75°F) | 28°C (82°F) |
| December | 31°C (88°F) | 25°C (77°F) | 28°C (82°F) |
| January | 32°C (90°F) | 24°C (75°F) | 27°C (81°F) |
| February | 33°C (91°F) | 24°C (75°F) | 28°C (82°F) |
Dry Season Is Best For You If:
- You love swimming and snorkelling in clear, calm water filled with fish
- You do not mind paying more or sharing the island with larger crowds
- You want to see Koh Lipe at its best, with white sand, clear water and sunny weather

Wet Season – The Worst Time
Wet Season is, as you may have guessed, much more rainy.
Though the weather starts to change in March, the wet season runs from May until October and you can expect rough seas and plenty of heavy downpours during this time.
When we sat in our hotel room gazing out the window onto Sunset Beach it was rather depressing if I am honest. We then had three days of plenty of rain and that was almost the high season.
I can only imagine it’s worse in the rainy season. Still, once the weather did change we felt on top of the world to be moving around this small but exceptional island in the Andaman Sea.
You must decide what you really want, choose your budget, and run with it.
That’s my advice.
| Month (2023) | Average High | Average Low | Rainfall |
|---|---|---|---|
| May | 34°C (93°F) | 26°C (79°F) | 270mm |
| June | 33°C (91°F) | 26°C (79°F) | 290mm |
| July | 32°C (90°F) | 25°C (77°F) | 310mm |
| August | 32°C (90°F) | 25°C (77°F) | 300mm |
| September | 31°C (88°F) | 24°C (75°F) | 330mm |
| October | 31°C (88°F) | 24°C (75°F) | 290mm |
Wet Season Is The Best Time For You If:
- You are travelling on a budget and prefer quieter beaches
- You are comfortable with bumpy ferry journeys and rough seas
- You have enough flexibility to change your plans on rainy days
During the rainy season, temperatures move between 28-35°C (82-95°F), but it feels much warmer due to the high humidity levels that can reach up to 90%. You’ll want to keep that air conditioning running.
The rain patterns are pretty interesting during this time.
You might get sudden heavy downpours that last for an hour or two, followed by periods of sunshine, kinda like what we experienced. Some days, though, it can rain continuously for several hours or even all day.
The sea gets quite angry during this season, with waves that can reach 2-3 metres high. This means some boat services might be limited, and snorkelling or diving conditions aren’t perfect because of poor visibility in the water. But it’s not all doom and gloom.
The rainy season has its perks. The island is less crowded, prices are lower, and there’s something quite beautiful about watching tropical storms roll in from your balcony.
Plus, when the sun does come out, you’ll still get to enjoy those gorgeous beaches.

Where To Stay In Koh Lipe
There are plenty of great places to stay in Koh Lipe.
When we stayed in Koh Lipe we loved our hotel just a couple of minutes walk to Sunset Beach.
Bayview Sunset offered great views of the sea and a decent breakfast too. I paid 1,008 THB ($31.40/€26.39/£22.59) per night which was a good deal.
It was located a short walk from Walking Street so it felt very peaceful at night with no noise. Instead of staying on Sunrise Beach where loads of hotels pack along the coastline, this was far better for me.

Koh Lipe Travel Tips
Getting To Koh Lipe
You need to get a ferry to Koh Lipe.
When we arrived the ferry was bumpy and rough on the way over.
The ferry had a lifejacket on each seat and everything went safely. On the way back, however, a staff member accidentally dropped my suitcase into the sea while loading it onto the boat.
In fairness, the waves made it very hard to even walk along the plastic man-made pontoon which was moving with the waves and plenty of people nearly ended up in the sea. Here’s my advice. Keep your electronics in a backpack that you carry yourself, don’t pack them in your checked luggage.
Trust me, I learned this lesson the hard way.

National Park Closure
Depending on when you visit, you may not be able to visit Koh Lipe’s surrounding islands on a group tour.
When we arrived, the hotel receptionist informed us that we couldn’t do the 7 island tour or visit any of the nearby islands because the National Park was closed from May 15th until October 15th.
This was disappointing, so it’s best to be prepared and know what you’re getting yourself into before booking your ticket.
All Tuk-Tuk Rides Cost 50 Baht ($1.49/€1.31/£1.12)
Wherever you’re located on the island, a tuk-tuk will cost you 50 Baht ($1.49/€1.31/£1.12) to go anywhere.
Don’t let anyone trick you into paying more.
You won’t need to worry about scams because in my experience, they’ll tell you the correct price right when you arrive. One time I even got a free lift from my hotel to North Point Beach. I insisted on paying the driver but he refused. Any other time I had to pay, I had no issue with it.
It’s helpful to know this in advance I feel.

Late Shoulder Season, Or Peak Season, My Final Call
Koh Lipe is a beautiful island to visit but when you visit is very important.
I would happily come back in Late September, October or even November before the crowds get too crazy and it loses that empty island feel. But overall, the best time to visit Koh Lipe is between November and February.
From my experience, I loved the days with warm sunshine, but wondered if I made the right decision when the sky opened up for the second half of the week.
Sure, there will be thousands of other ecstatic tourists arriving in droves at Pattaya Beach eager to experience some rest and relaxation. All things considered, I found Koh Lipe to be truly up there in terms of Thailand’s most naturally beautiful islands.

FAQs
Which Month Is Best For Koh Lipe?
November to February are the best months to visit Koh Lipe. This is the dry season, so you can expect some of the island’s best weather. Temperatures usually range from 24°C to 32°C (75°F to 90°F), while the sea temperature is around 28°C (82°F). March and April are even hotter, just before the wet season begins. September tends to have a lot of rainy days, but from my experience, October can be an ideal time to visit if you want fewer crowds and do not mind the occasional shower.
Is Koh Lipe A Party Island?
Koh Lipe is not a party island. It is better known for massages, cosy bars, beautiful beaches and relaxation than wild nights out. On rainy days, I stayed in my hotel, booked a massage or went out for another cappuccino. Sometimes, I even swam while the rain poured down. If you are looking for somewhere like Khao San Road with parties that continue all night, you will not find it here. Koh Lipe is better suited to travellers who want quiet beach days and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Is Koh Lipe Affected By Monsoon?
Koh Lipe experiences its monsoon season from May to October. Heavy rain and rough seas are common during these months. On one journey, waves crashed into the pier, and a crew member dropped my suitcase, and it ended up in the sea. Thankfully, a crew member managed to fish it out. Even in September, I experienced several days of heavy rain. If you visit during the wet season, be prepared to spend some time indoors. But when the weather clears, you can enjoy quieter streets, uncrowded beaches and the feeling that you have the island almost to yourself.
