Exploring Vientiane Night Market
My Vientiane Night Market Experience – Fun And Worth A Visit
Located along the banks of the Mekong River, the Vientiane Night Market comes alive as the sun sets, bringing colour and energy to the Laotian capital’s waterfront.
Whether you’re searching for authentic souvenirs, hungry for delicious street food, or simply wanting to experience Laotian culture firsthand, this market offers insights into Laos that you won’t find in guidebooks.
During my 30-day journey through Laos, I spent several evenings exploring this marketplace, and I’m excited to share everything you need to know about visiting times, location, costs, and what makes this market truly special.
I remember my first night at the market clearly – initially, I stood at the entrance, somewhat intimidated by the unfamiliar food stalls with their sizzling woks and mysterious ingredients. But by my second visit, I was confidently pointing at dishes I couldn’t pronounce and discovering some of the most memorable flavours of my entire trip. That progression from hesitation to enthusiasm is what makes travel so rewarding.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything fellow solo travellers and couples need to know before visiting Vientiane’s Night Market – from practical details like opening hours and getting there, to insider tips on negotiating prices and finding the most authentic local treasures.
By the end, you’ll be fully prepared to make the most of this essential Vientiane experience without wasting precious time or money.

Exciting Things To Do At Vientiane Night Market
Let’s begin with the food!
Incredible, delicious, and very affordable. When we visited the night market, we would typically enjoy sushi, meatballs, noodles, and even ice cream. Both nights in Vientiane, we had dinner here.
I can safely say I wouldn’t eat anywhere else if only spending a couple of days passing through.
It’s worth noting that we didn’t see many tourists around here – mostly locals diving into plates full of freshly caught and sourced food.
Further south along the riverbank, you’ll find clothing, souvenirs, and electronics.
This area attracts more tourists, and you can purchase very affordable items. We picked up a couple of t-shirts for just 20,000 KIP, about €2.50.
As you pass through the stalls, I urge you to visit the north side of the market to catch the sunset.
The sky turns an intense pink colour and provides a spectacular view for about half an hour.
This was an incredible way to finish off a day exploring the city’s temples.
Tips For Travelling To The Vientiane Night Market
Ensure you bring cash.
Most markets in Asia operate on a cash-only basis rather than accepting cards. The closest ATM to the night market is BCEL ATM & Exchange. During our time in Laos, we encountered problems with some ATMs that wouldn’t work for reasons we still don’t understand.
There are several ATMs we successfully used, all located within a few meters of each other.
Try these alternative options if you experience any issues.
Vientiane Night Market Opening Hours
The Night Market is open from 6:00 PM until around 10:00 PM.
You will see vendors setting up just outside for a couple of hours before, from about 4:00 PM onwards, but you won’t be able to purchase anything from them during this setup time.
Where Is The Vientiane Night Market?
You can find the Vientiane Night Market on the riverbank of the Mekong River (how cool is that!) But more precisely, it is between Sithane Road and Quai Fa Ngum.
The yellow marker on the map indicates the outdoor food court where you can sit at plastic tables and chairs to enjoy delicious Laotian food.
The blue marker shows where you can browse clothing and other apparel.
What To Buy In Vientiane Night Market?
There are many things worth buying when in Laos.
Apart from enjoying as much tasty, authentic Laotian food for dinner as possible, you can also bring back souvenirs to preserve your memories or simply pick up items you need to continue your exploration of Laos.
If you need clothes, you’re in luck. There are plenty of stalls selling everything from long-sleeve t-shirts to trousers, shorts, and swimming trunks. You could even try some traditional Lao clothing- you’re in the capital, so why not look the part?
These items also make great souvenirs to bring home and will preserve wonderful memories of your trip.
If you need a new wallet, necklaces, or phone accessories, you can get them here, too.
After several months in Southeast Asia, the heat and sweat severely damaged my wallet, and I badly needed an upgrade. If you find yourself in a similar situation, the Vientiane night market is the perfect place to find a replacement.
Is The Night Market Worth Visiting?
Yes, a visit to Vientiane Night Market is a great way to spend an evening when visiting the capital.
However, you should be prepared that its size and variety are much smaller compared to most markets found in Thailand.
In my experience, it’s mainly for locals rather than tourists. You’ll see Laotians purchasing everyday items like clothes, sunglasses, and other necessities. These are the day-to-day items everyone needs in Vientiane.
The best way to make the most of the night market is to stroll through the stalls and pick up any items you need for the rest of your trip. Once that’s complete, head over to fill your belly with some top-notch seafood skewers and a refreshing Beer Lao.
If you are not eating at the night market, then you will only spend a short time walking through the stalls and the street.

What Is There To Do In Vientiane At Night After 10.00 PM?
So you’ve finished up shopping at the night market, and your belly is full.
Now you need to spend the rest of the night entertained. My advice is not to leave the riverside. There are Ferris wheels and plenty of fun to be had. The street will fill with kids and parents, and the atmosphere is electric.
The streets really do come to life in Vientiane after 10:00 PM, and you can soak up all of this fun by strolling around and maybe even
If you’ve had your fair share along the river and want something fresh, then I recommend heading back into the city and looking for some nice bars that the city has, and there are many.
