Kok Tobe Almaty: The Ultimate Guide To Kazakhstan’s Most Instagram-Worthy Spot
Kok Tobe Hill, Almaty
Kok Tobe in Almaty sits 1,100 metres above the city, and if you’re wondering whether this hilltop park is worth the cable car ride up, I’m here to give you the honest answer.
During my Central Asian travels, I spent most of a day at Kok Tobe, arriving at midday and staying through sunset. The question on everyone’s mind is simple: what’s actually up there, and is it worth your time and money?
Here’s what you need to know.
The cable car costs KZT 8,000.00 return (about $16.00), which might seem steep until you see the views. Once you’re at the top, you’ll find an incredible viewpoint overlooking Almaty against snowcapped mountains, a small zoo, the famous Beatles monument, and an alpine coaster that I regret not trying.
But the real magic happens at sunset when the city lights start twinkling below.
One of my favourite moments? Watching kids dressed as zombies for Halloween running around the park whilst staff playfully scared them (and me). The atmosphere was brilliant, and it showed me that Kok Tobe isn’t just another touristy viewpoint. It’s a genuine hangout spot where locals bring their families, couples come for sunset photos, and everyone leaves with that “we made the right choice” feeling.
Whether you’ve got a few hours to kill or you’re planning a proper afternoon out, this guide covers everything. Cable car details, ticket prices, what to prioritise if you’re short on time, and which attractions are actually worth your money.

Where Is Kok Tobe Located?
Kok Tobe is located on a hill 1,100 metres above sea level, approximately 200 metres above Almaty city centre in Kazakhstan.
The cable car station sits on Dostyk Avenue near the Republic Palace, a 15-minute walk from the Abay metro station. I reached it via Yandex taxi for under KZT 1,200.00 ($2.00).
The hill is visible from most parts of Almaty due to the 371-metre TV tower on its peak, making it easy to spot and navigate towards.
What Is The Best Time To Visit Almaty?
The best time to visit Almaty is May to September for warm weather and summer vibes, though late October offers excellent conditions too.
I visited in late October and experienced cool, bright sunny days around 14°C to 16°C with epic sunsets and no wind at Kok Tobe.
The atmosphere was brilliant with plenty of space to move around by 06.00 PM, unlike summer crowds. Autumn provides clear skies and comfortable sightseeing temperatures, though you’ll need layers for cooler evenings.
I’d return in summer to wear shorts and experience the warmer atmosphere, but October delivered perfect visibility and smaller crowds for photography.
How To Get To Kok Tobe Park
There are a few good options to get to Kok Tobe.
All of which are easy.
Kok Tobe Hill Gondola Cableway
My suggestion is for you to get the Kok Tobe Hill Gondola Cableway (Luganskiy St 2, Almaty 050000, Kazakhstan) up to the hill to the park. Why?
The short trip up to Kok Tobe offers fast-changing views of the stunning mountains and city.
I was honestly left speechless. Gradually, you get higher and higher until you are looking down upon the huge city of Almaty. It’s about 200 metres above Almaty and 1,300 metres above sea level.
There was a slight fog which covered part of the sky, which gave a layered effect on this wonderful vista.
I can’t think of a more impressive view of a city to this day.
Cloud, fog, snowcapped mountains and vegetation will fill your view in the most impressive manner, all at the same time.
Bus
The cost from Omaroa Street for a round trip is 2,500 Tenge, or a single ticket is 1,000 Tenge.
If you are going from Dostyk Street, then it’s 1,500 Tenge for a single trip, and a round trip is 2,000 Tenge.
Kids are only charged 500 Tenge for a one-way ticket and 700 Tenge for a return. Not bad if you are moving with a family.
The bus stops running at 01.00 AM, so keep that in mind when planning your evening at Kok Tobe. Also note that public buses #95 and #99 run from Monday through Thursday from 07:00 AM to 11:00 PM and Friday through Sunday from 07:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
Getting to Kok Tobe is easy, and there are a few options which make life easy.
Taxi
Of course, you get a taxi or Yandex to Kok Tobe, which takes about fifteen minutes from the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Kok Tobe Entrance Fee
The cost to enter Kok Tobe is 4,000 Tenge per person, one way.
Or you can purchase a round ticket for 8,000 Tenge (€13.77). I think this is reasonable, considering you can spend the whole day up there.
Kids go for cheaper with a one-way ticket of 3,000 Tenge and a return of 4,500 Tenge, provided they are under 12 years old.
Kok Tobe Opening Hours
Kok Tobe is open daily from 10.00 AM until midnight, except on Tuesdays when it opens later at 03.00 PM due to maintenance.
I arrived around midday on a weekday in late October and had no issues with queues at the cable car station.
The ticket office was busy but moved quickly, and we waited less than one minute for our cable car.
If you’re planning a sunset visit as I did, the summer months see sunset around 08.30 PM to 09.00 PM, giving you several hours to explore before the golden hour. I stayed from midday through sunset and found the park progressively busier as evening approached, though it never felt overcrowded.
The midnight closing time means you can enjoy the city lights after dark without feeling rushed.
Based on my October visit, arriving around 05.00 PM strikes the perfect balance between daylight exploration and sunset timing, with enough time to experience the major attractions before darkness falls.
Things To See At Kok Tobe
Kok Tobe Beatles Statue
You won’t believe what I stumbled upon at Kok Tobe!
There’s a bronze bench with John Lennon sitting and playing the guitar, and right beside him are Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison standing.
And get this, they even play Beatles songs from speakers around the statue. It was such an unexpected and cool discovery!
You will notice locals and foreigners getting pictures with the fearsome four. We had to do the same!
Zoo
You can spend time walking around Kok Tobe Zoo and say hello to all the exotic animals found within.
It is a pleasant way to explore the outdoors, and the children who will undoubtedly be attending too can make you smile with their enjoyment.
You can expect to see anything from a Lama to Fallow deer, Emus, Falcons and pheasants.
As you can see, there is a wide mix of species, which I found to be very interesting.
TV Tower
Then you have the Almaty TV tower.
Standing tall at a whopping 371 metres high, it is likely the first thing you see on the mountain before you make your way up to Kok Tobe.
Though we couldn’t get within 200 metres of it due to construction, it is no doubt a place to visit when up on the top of the hill.
The tower was built between 1975 and 1983, but was reconstructed in 2012.
It remains one of the most identifiable constructions in Almaty to this day.
Alpine Coaster
The cost is 3000 Tenge per person and looks amazing.
Though we didn’t get to experience this, we could appreciate the fun from the smiles of all the teenagers who waited eagerly for their seats.
Ferris Wheel
The cost to have a spin on the Ferris wheel is 2,500 Tenge per person.
While it was impressive to go up in the evening when the city lights dotted the sky, we were disappointed at how long it lasted. Maybe one or two rotations, and we were kicked out.
Still, the views were amazing.
We asked the guy operating it if we could go around again, as there was nobody else in sight, and he said no! What a killjoy!
But at the very top, you can see very far down to the city, and I did feel a little nauseous if I am honest, but I would do the same again for that view.

Can I Eat At Kok Tobe?
You can eat at some of the restaurants found at Kok Tobe.
There is also fast food, coffee and other sweet treats to enjoy while you embrace the carnival atmosphere.
To be honest, I wasn’t that hungry, but the sizzling smell and crackle of the food made me devour some traditional meats. We ate some of the chicken skewers, or Shashlik as they are known locally, along with juice and coffee.
Locals mostly sat around us and laughed together with their families.
The atmosphere was great.
Best Photo Locations
Apart from the top of the Ferris wheel, the best photo locations are found below the Monteverde restaurant – right underneath where the cable car pulls in to let people out at the top.
As you can see, I captured a nice sunset image, which I am very proud of.
Additionally, you can get stunning images of the mountains if you sit on the benches directly opposite the Ferris wheel, about 50 meters away and turn away from the wheel.
Conclusion: Kok Tobe Is Worth Your Time In Almaty
Kok Tobe deserves a spot on every Almaty itinerary, even if you only have 2-3 days in the city.
I’d rate the experience 8.5 out of 10 and rank it as a top activity alongside Almaty’s parks and museums, but more fun and active.
Prioritise three things: the cable car ride up for stunning city views, staying until sunset for magical golden hour light, and riding the Ferris wheel for elevated panoramas. I spent money only on cable car tickets (KZT 8,000.00), the Ferris wheel (KZT 2,500.00), and small snacks, making it an excellent value for a half-day experience.
The compact layout means you can explore everything quickly, including the zoo, without feeling rushed. Kok Tobe suits families seeking kid-friendly activities, couples wanting a fun day out, and photographers chasing city and mountain shots. The blend of attractions, viewpoints, and atmosphere makes it uniquely enjoyable compared to static museums.
No advance booking needed, just arrive around 05.00 PM during summer for optimal sunset timing and smaller crowds. The experience exceeded my expectations, and the memories of that bright October day with epic sunset views remain a highlight of my Kazakhstan travels.
