Where to Stay in Cat Ba Island (Best Areas & Hotels Guide)
My Tips On Where To Stay In Cat Ba
Where to stay in Cat Ba is one of those questions that feels simple until you start looking into it and realise the island is bigger, more complex, and more under construction than you ever expected.
Most travel guides give you a list of hotels and call it a day. They don’t tell you which part of the island you’re actually staying in, what it looks like outside the front door, or whether it suits a solo trip or a couple’s getaway. That’s where things get confusing fast.
I spent a couple of nights on Cat Ba during a three-month trip through Vietnam, my second time in the country. I knew the island had a reputation. What I didn’t expect was the scale of development happening along the main harbour area. Cranes everywhere. Half-finished towers. It genuinely made me hesitate.
But I’m glad I stayed.
To cut to the chase – I recommend staying on the main strip near Cat Ba Square.
Because once you get past the construction and understand how the island is laid out, Cat Ba rewards you. The national park interior is calm and green. The beaches are quieter than you’d think. And Cai Beo pier has a completely different energy to the rest of the place.
This guide will help you figure out where you are, which hotels are worth the money, and what you can realistically expect to pay.

Tips For Booking A Hotel In Cát Bà Island
When I visited in July 2025, the main strip near Cát Bà Square and the surrounding area was basically a big construction site, and it looked like the transformation would continue for several years.
Even so, I could still get into places that were finished, like cafés, bars, shops, and restaurants, and I could walk to the beach at Bến tàu Cát Bà terminal.
This area was the most affected and, to be honest, it was an eyesore the whole time. I did not want to see a construction site. I wanted to see an amazing bay like in the past.
First, book a higher-floor room for the best views once the construction is finished (just check if they have an elevator – mine didn’t). Even if it is not, it is still much better. Also, if you stay along the main road as I did, it is loud.
I could hear people laughing, singing, and crying late into the night, so if you want something quieter, book away from the main road or ask reception for a quieter side.
Solo travellers, couples, and families will all enjoy staying near Cát Bà Square for convenience, close to bars, restaurants, massage parlours, and transport all over the island.
But if you want to avoid the construction at all costs, consider the southern beaches, the centre of the island, or Cai Beo Pier.
Cát Bà Square – The Main Strip
I stayed at Phuong Mai Family Hotel.
I paid $61.00 for two nights. It was decent, but it didn’t include breakfast.
It was not my favourite place, but it is a decent budget to mid-range option. The bedsheets were not the cleanest part, and there was some hair on the floor. So, yeah. Didn’t make me think it was fantastic.
Still, if you get a room with a view, you can see the whole bay. It was under heavy construction when I visited, and that pretty much ruined the scenery.
I often walked to Cat Ba Square, had loads of restaurant options along the road, and took the buggies through the town or to the beaches. Overall, I would rate this place a 6 out of 10, so consider a few other options too.
After staying here, I feel it is best for families, couples, and solo travellers.

Centre Of The Island – National Park Area
The centre of the island felt like a jungle.
Snakes on the road, cattle randomly dotted in the fields, then boom, limestone cliffs covering kilometres of landscape. I absolutely loved it.
Be aware that staying centrally on the island will mean taking taxis or renting a bike or car to explore. If you are happy with that, then fair play. If you are like me and have no experience riding a motorbike, I recommend the Nui Ngoc Loop area close to Cat Ba Square.
I couldn’t find any budget accommodation in the centre of the island, so let’s jump straight to mid-range. The drawback is that you’ll need to travel 12 km to the centre of Cat Ba, which isn’t ideal.
Some good options are listed below:
This is best for couples looking for a romantic time away with privacy, and for those who love adventure and have their own transport.

Beaches In The South
There are amazing beaches on Cat Ba Island.
You can discover them in my post about the best things to do in Cat Ba. Some of the amazing beaches have incredible hotel options nearby.
When I visited the beaches in the south of the island, I could not help feeling envious of the people sliding down the slides, and the views from the top floors must have been superior.
Again, if you do not have access to a bike, you will need to get a taxi to the main strip. Also, these are more mid-range to luxury, but they are worth checking out because the value is insane.
What I didn’t like about this area was that it might start to feel lonely if you don’t leave the beach, but thankfully, it was only a 20-minute walk from the town square.
The beaches are best for families, couples, and those who do not want to move too much and soak up the sun on the beach.

Cai Beo Pier
All of the hotels listed below will have great views of Cai Beo Pier, assuming you get a sea view room and it is high up.
The fishing village may not be directly in sight, but having quick access to the pier means you can explore the fishing village and nearby islands, and experience some of the best landscapes in North Vietnam.
The only negative I could see here is if you are not riding a bike or taking a taxi to the town centre or the national park. You will have to walk a very hilly road to the centre, which is tough in the heat.
I walked from my hotel to the pier and regretted it fast.
If you will only do a boat tour once, this might not be the place for you. If you want to stay on the boat, I recommend booking Venezia Cruises, who have brilliant reviews.
However, apart from the buses of tourists coming in, it can be a peaceful place to stay.
The pier is best for those planning to spend a lot of time in the bay on the boat, solo travellers and families.

Transport Around Cat Ba
Choosing where to stay on Cat Ba Island will be significant.
You will need to get around the island, and knowing how to move is key.
When I visited, I walked, took a motorbike taxi, used an electric buggy (useful to go from the main strip to the beaches or pier), and took regular taxis.
If you stay close to Cat Ba Square and the main strip, you will see bikes, buses, and buggies passing all day. You can wave down a taxi and get around that way.
If you choose to stay on the beaches, you can, in theory, walk to the main strip and square, which takes around 20 minutes, or take a taxi.
If you are staying inland, you will spend a lot on taxis unless you ride a bike or rent a car yourself.
While taxis are not overly expensive, I paid a driver at Cai Beo Pier 400,000 Vietnamese dong ($) to drive me around for most of the day and visit the sites.
Best to consider the additional costs when booking your hotel in Cat Ba if you are budgeting.
Time Of Year To Book
April to May and September to October are theoretically the best times to go.
I travelled to Cat Ba at the end of July, and it was busy, but not crazy like Hanoi. People filled the main beaches during the day, restaurants at night, and boats came in and out of the pier.
Would I recommend coming this time of year? Absolutely, because the weather was perfect. Warm but not sizzling hot, and some days had rain. Nightlife was decent, with restaurants and bars busy.
However, note that hotel prices will be higher than at other times of the year.
I paid $61.00 for two nights at Phuong Mai Family Hotel **** and, and while it was a great value for me, there were loads of better options and worse.
You could also visit during early spring if it works for you.
Book well in advance to save funds, but I booked a couple of weeks and got great value. Booking at the hotle id often cheaper than booking online.
Conclusion
Cat Ba Island has loads of amazing places to stay, with different areas to match your vibe.
For a more peaceful stay, consider staying close to the beaches of Cat Co 1, 2 and 3. I stayed right in the heart of the construction site, and I did not regret it because I was so close to the restaurants and had plenty of options.
More centrally on the island, you can find that jungle vibe, with trees and wildlife noises all around you.
Staying close to the pier will give you easy access to Lan Ha Bay, and you can experience the cliffs from the boat.
Pick the right area, and you will have an amazing time on Cat Ba Island.

FAQs
Where Is The Best Place To Stay In Cat Ba?
The best place to stay in Cat Ba is along the Nui Ngoco Loop, in front of Cat Ba Square. I stayed there and had fast access to the beaches, restaurants, nightlife, and decent views across the bay. You can easily take transport to other parts of the island from here and will have many options.
How Many Days To Spend On Cat Ba Island?
I recommend staying 3 to 5 days on Cat Ba. This gives you time to maximise your trip without feeling too rushed. I only stayed for two, and looking back, I could have easily doubled it. The beaches, pier, national park caves, and other activities all take time, and choosing where to stay in Cat Ba is important if you want to make the most of it.
Should I Stay On Cat Ba Island?
Yes, staying on Cat Ba can be a great experience. You can visit Cai Beo fishing village, see amazing beaches, explore deep and dangerous caves, find great viewpoints in the jungle, and do a boat tour into Lan Ha Bay, which rivals Ha Long Bay in my view. There are loads of places to eat and fun things to do there.
