Bich Dong Pagoda sits just a short drive or cycle from the centre of Tam Coc, and yet somehow, plenty of visitors skip it entirely. If you’re wondering whether it’s worth the detour, how long you actually need to be there, and what else is nearby, you’re in exactly the right place.

I pedalled out on a rickety hire bike, weaving through one of the most extraordinary limestone landscapes I’ve ever seen. Cattle drifted across the road. Karst peaks rose up on every side. By the time I arrived, I wasn’t just visiting a pagoda. I’d earned it.
Then the music started.
Soft, unhurried melodies floating out from somewhere inside the temple. I stood there longer than I planned to, not really thinking about anything. That’s the kind of place Bich Dong is.

Where Is Bich Dong Pagoda?
Less than 3 kilometres from the town of Tam Coc is Bich Dong Pagoda.
You can get there in about 8 minutes by driving or 20 minutes by cycling from Tam Coc.
If you feel energetic, it takes about 40 minutes to walk, but I do not recommend it because it can be pretty warm all year round.

Getting There
I recommend taking a bicycle for the views and to really soak it all in, which you cannot do on a motorbike because it is too fast.
Walking is an option if you bring loads of water and take breaks along the way, but a motorbike or bicycle is best.
If you want a comfy, easy option, going with a group in a shared minivan works well too. I recommend booking this tour in Tam Coc, which includes the major sites like Trang An Boat Complex and Mua Cave for sunset.

Bich Dong Pagoda is open every day from 07.30 AM to 04.30 PM.
What To Wear
I suggest wearing comfortable footwear with good grip.
If the rocks are wet, they can be slippery. Wear light, breathable clothing, as it can be hot and humid depending on when you go. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and sunglasses. If you need it, a hiking pole could make the short trek easier, although it may be overkill for many.
Long sleeves are best for protection from mosquitoes.
When I visited, I was thankful I brought my backpack to carry a light waterproof jacket and water bottle so I could quickly grab them if needed.
What Can I Do At Bich Dong Pagoda?
I will be honest. There is not so much to do.
The main reason to visit is to see one of Tam Coc’s historic pagodas, which just happens to be incredibly beautiful.
You can admire the lily pads on the Đầm sen Bích Động in front of the beautiful stone entrance.
Walking through the caves was exciting. While it is not big, and I expected a larger complex for some reason, it does not take long to see the site in depth.
Do not miss the peaceful prayer area to the left as you walk through the stone pier. Many people seemed to miss that and walked right up to the cave.
Temple Valley Sun was my favourite part of the temple, as well as the trek itself.
You can eat at Gạo Restaurant & Bar Coffee, Nhà Hàng Anh thư restaurant & coffee or get a massage at Sen Spa & Massage Service & Beauty, both located right at the entrance. You can also take a break in the shade here before or after your excursion.
What Is Bich Dong Pagoda?
This place is an amazing historical place of worship in Vietnam.
It dates back to the 15th century and is located inside a cave complex. Built in 1428, it blew me away the moment I arrived.
When I visited, I made my way along the path surrounded by water, through the caves with Buddha statues, and climbed the steps up to the peaceful area with lovely views down into the valleys.
If you are looking for one of the best things to do in Ninh Binh and Tam Coc, I recommend visiting this temple. It is easy to reach and has free entry.

My Experience Visiting Bich Dong Pagoda
When I visited Bich Dong Pagoda, I had a really nice time overall.
I parked my bike opposite the entrance and walked across the walkway. One thing I did not like was the awkward moment when people would frown as they walked by. The path is narrow, and with everyone trying to get a photo, it felt like it could take hours, so the vibe was not great.
I flew my drone up above and got some nice images. Walking through the complex, I was surprised by how long I spent there. It took about 10 minutes to reach the summit of the Temple Valley Sun.
It was not hard for me. The views across to another lake were nice, but not outstanding compared to Hang Mua Cave. Peaceful Buddhist music played through speakers at the top of the steps, which really made the experience calming.

What To See Close By
I suggest combining Bich Dong Pagoda with a few nearby stops.
As mentioned before, it does not take long to visit, so you can maximise your time and get the best value from the trip.
Stop at Paddy Field on the way to Pagoda. When I cycled past here, I had to stop and fly the drone for some amazing images. I also passed Buffalo on the road and saw families cycling by. It was peaceful and beautiful, and I felt free from city life for the first time in ages.
The Buffalo Cave is only a short bike ride away.
Here, I fed the birds, played with the baby ducks, and even did a spot of fishing. I explored the cave too, and it was a surreal place to relax. It felt hidden from most people, which I liked.
If you have the time and energy, make it to Thung Nham Ecotourism Zone. This is so cool.
I took a boat around the lake, wandered the beautiful grounds, and found the thousand-year-old tree.
This type of day requires a backpack full of snacks and energy drinks, especially if you are cycling.
You can stop at the many places to eat on the roads, and these places often offer food, so just be prepared.

When To Visit
The best time of year to visit is between January and April, when you usually get decent overall weather.
When I visited in early August, it was very hot, but it was not overcrowded.
I could move around the pagoda freely, find parking, and there was not much traffic on the road to the temple, which was a nice surprise.
May and June will give you nice golden rice fields as you get closer to the pagoda from Tam Coc. In terms of timing, it is always best to go early in the morning to avoid large tour groups.
You will have a better chance of a peaceful experience with the pagoda mostly to yourself, or with only a small group.

You can stay in Tam Coc or Ninh Binh and travel to the pagoda from there.
