Where To Stay In Ninh Binh: All You Need To Know

Where To Stay In Ninh Binh – Stay In Tam Coc!

Most people searching for where to stay in Ninh Binh end up booking something in Tam Coc, and honestly, that’s exactly what you should do too.

Here’s the thing about Ninh Binh province. The main town itself sits about 10km away from all the limestone karsts, rice paddies and boat tours that brought you here in the first place. Tam Coc village, on the other hand, puts you right in the middle of everything worth seeing.

I learned this the smart way by staying at a lovely mid-range guesthouse in Tam Coc during my visit. Within minutes of arriving, I’d rented a bicycle and spent the afternoon cycling along quiet country roads, passing water buffalo, waving at farmers, and stopping whenever a view demanded it. No taxis, no timing issues, just total freedom to explore at my own pace.

Whether you’re travelling solo or with your partner, choosing the right base makes all the difference between a relaxed adventure and a logistical headache. Tam Coc has everything from budget dorms to boutique hotels tucked between rice fields, and I’m going to walk you through the best options for different budgets and travel styles.

The guesthouse I stayed at was great, but there’s so much more available depending on what matters most to you. Some places have pools overlooking the karsts, others are family-run spots where you’ll get insider tips over breakfast, and a few offer the kind of peace and quiet that makes you want to extend your stay by three days. Let me show you exactly where to book.

Choosing Where To Stay In Ninh Binh

Usually, your budget and time will play the biggest part when it comes to choosing where to stay in Ninh Binh.

I recommend staying close to the centre where the boats leave for the Tam Coc boat tour. When I stayed a one-minute walk from there, I would walk around the small lake in the evening and grab some food at some of the best local places I found nearby.

You can stay within the Trang An complex, which is a more adventurous and wild experience. I would have loved this, and I will try it next time.

But for nightlife (be careful when drinking cocktails – don’t drink them, is my advice), food options, and closeness to the main attractions and transport, stay in the centre of Tam Coc.

How Much Time Should I Spend In Ninh Binh?

I recommend spending at least 3–5 days in Ninh Binh.

There is so much to see.

You can do some tours that combine the best sites altogether, so you can maximise time. This was my biggest learning from many months of travel in Asia, yes, you don’t get the freedom, but when you have time constraints, it’s great to experience the best bits.

Even two days could be enough to see places like Hang Mua Cave and the amazing pagodas found scattered across the limestone cliffs-packed region.

Top Tips For Booking Hotels In Ninh Binh

I recommend booking all your trips through Booking.com.

Booking.com gave me great online support when I needed it, just in case anything goes wrong (which is rare).

For most of my trips in Asia, I used this and got loads of discounts on the Genius Awards programme.

You have other options for booking through Hotels.com, Expedia and Agoda, all great options too, which are transparent.

Things You Cannot Miss in Ninh Binh

Don’t miss Hang Mua Cave.

This hike is extraordinary and involves about 400 steps, but it’s worth every one. When I reached the top, I could see the best views of the region. Limestone cliffs seem to go on and on.

Additionally, don’t miss Bai Dinh Pagoda, Trang An Complex, Thung Nham Ecotourism Zone, and Bich Dong Pagoda.

Getting To Ninh Binh From Hanoi

You can get to Ninh Binh from Hanoi in a couple of ways.

When I visited, I took a shared minivan from Hanoi to Ninh Binh, and it took about an hour and a half. We stopped a couple of times along the way to drop people off and pick people up, and I was the last one to get off alone in Ninh Binh.

You can book a private taxi, which is great for comfort and air conditioning. You can book a shared limousine minivan, or you can book train tickets, which bring you to Ninh Binh train station and take 2 hours and ten minutes. From there, you’ll take a pre-arranged taxi to Tam Coc.

This is where all the action is.

Can I Stay In Trang An Complex?

Amazingly, yes, you can stay in the Trang An complex.

When I visited, I passed by some of these accommodations, and they took my breath away. How scenic would it be to wake up and walk out to limestone cliffs, sounds of the birds and greenery all around with blue skies?

Amazing. One place to look at is Trang An Eco Holiday Retreat, which has an amazing pool, wooden interior and views of the cliffs.

Consider Trang An Pristine View Homestay for lake views and mountain views when you wake. It’s a 4-star and looks incredible.

Lastly, Trang An Ecolodge is another 4-star place to stay worth considering if you want to be close to Trang An.

When To Avoid Ninh Binh

People will tell you not to visit Ninh Binh in the rainy season.

And I agree.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have great days of sunshine and heat. When I visited in July and August, I had plenty of sunshine and days full of clear blue skies. At times, we had downpours, but mostly had long spells of dry weather.

May to October is the rainy season, and that’s a lot of the year, so you can still have a great time in Ninh Binh when you visit.

Conclusion

So yes, Ninh Binh and Tam Coc have loads of great places to stay.

I do recommend going to Tam Coc because that’s where all the action is. The train station is in Ninh Binh city, and while there are a few things to do there, most people skip it.

I made a post about what to pack when visiting Southeast Asia, and I wrote about why travel insurance is so expensive. I recommend Safety Wing for sure. Read about my experience to plan your trip to Ninh Binh with ease and maximise the enjoyment.

FAQs

Is It Better To Stay In Ninh Binh Or Tam Coc?

If you’re curious about where to stay in Ninh Binh or Tam Coc, then I recommend Tam Coc. It’s right beside Ninh Binh, and many people confuse them and use them interchangeably. The real action is at Tam Coc, so that’s why I recommend people stay there. You’ll have access to the Tam Coc boat experience, Hang Mua Cave, rice terraces, Buffalo Cave, and plenty of other fun places to explore.

How Many Days Are Enough For Ninh Binh?

I recommend 3–5 days in Ninh Binh. While I stayed much longer here (9 days) as I was working as a digital nomad too. In three days, you can see all the best bits and enjoy the nature all around the region. If you can stay 5 days to really make the most of it at a nice leisurely pace. Book tours, eat the best Vietnamese food and enjoy the landscape because it’s incredible. Finding where to stay in Ninh Binh is the easy part.

Can You Get Grab In Ninh Binh?

Yes, you can get Grab, but only cars are available. I couldn’t order bikes in Ninh Binh, which made getting around harder because I don’t ride a scooter. Still, I rented a bicycle and enjoyed it so much. I recommend getting a scooter or bicycle when travelling around Ninh Binh rather than using Grab. You’ll lose time waiting for the car, and with the country roads, it will take longer. You can try it once and see how it goes.
