Hang Múa Cave And Viewpoint: Is It Worth 500 Steps?
Exploring Hang Múa Cave – Do Not Miss Out
Hang Múa Cave and viewpoint are both among the best things to do in Ninh Binh, and it is exactly the kind of place you Google when you want the real details. How do you get there? How hard is the climb? How much does it cost?
I visited twice during my three-month trip through North and Central Vietnam, and it blew me away both times. The second visit, I remember struggling, sweating, and genuinely gasping near the top. It was hard work, but the reward was a 360-degree view that made me stop talking for a minute.
If you are travelling as a couple or solo, I will walk you through the easiest way to reach Hang Múa, what the steps feel like if heights are not your thing, whether it is actually worth it, and the best time to go for cooler weather and fewer people.

My Experience Visiting Hang Múa Cave
I had a couple of amazing experiences at Hang Mua Cave.
It costs 100,000 Vietnamese dong to enter.
The first time was with a group tour, and the second was alone. When I went alone, I could actually explore Hang Mua properly. It is worth seeing.
It is a huge mass of rock with a small pathway underneath, leading about 80 metres to a few granite seats, and not much else on the other side.
People come here, however, for the views, and the views of the limestone cliffs and rice terraces were unreal.
It showed me that this region of Vietnam is a divine travel place, like something from Avatar.
I quickly realised that taking my time was essential in the heat.
If I pushed too hard, I would have fainted and dehydrated myself, so I drank water and took it steady.
It is rather steep and approximately 500 steps, so your legs will burn quickly, as mine did, so be prepared.
The heat did not help either.
Our tour guide said that if we went right as we climbed the steps, we would not get as good a view of the landscape, and I could see what they meant from the last lookout point before the summit.
The views were extraordinary even from there.
At the top, there is a small statue covered by a roof, which was full of people enjoying the views.

When To Go
The best time to go is early morning or later in the afternoon into the evening, so you can catch the sunset or avoid the crowds.
If you go at 07.00 AM, you will see far fewer people, and it will not be as hot as midday.
When I went, it was around 04.30 PM, and the light was changing nicely in the sky. There were loads of people (early August), and I felt it made the atmosphere better rather than taking away from it.
It took me 20 minutes to get from the bottom of the steps to the top, and I would consider myself to have a medium to high fitness level.
It will come down to you and your preferences!

Getting To Hang Mua
Hang Mua Cave is about 6 kilometres from the centre of Tam Coc and 7.5 kilometres from the centre of Ninh Binh.
You can motorbike there. I saw many people going this way when I visited, as well as loads of shared minivans.
This was how I went with a group tour, which was so much fun, and the great group made the atmosphere even better. There are loads of parking spaces for bikes, cars, and vans, and a toilet right beside the ticket office.
The road is of good quality the whole way, and you could even cycle, but I do not recommend it in the heat.
In the end, unless you are going on a tour, you should take a Grab car, unless you can ride a motorbike. A car is the safest and most comfortable option, with air conditioning and seatbelts.
It should take no more than 10 to 15 minutes to get there, assuming there are no traffic issues.

Top Tips for Visiting
Bring sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and breathable clothes because when it is hot, you will really feel the sweat.
Water is key. I use these handy Larq bottles.
I do not recommend bringing a heavy backpack that will only tire you out and slow you down. Leave your bags locked on the bus for safety and go lightly.
Stop on the way up if you need to. Take a few selfies, and fly a drone if you have one (I did this from ground level because there were too many people on the viewing platform).
There was a small stall selling cool drinks and snacks, which, if you need it, will be a lifesaver.
Don’t wear flip-flops to make sure you have a good grip.
Best Tours To Consider
I did this amazing tour that included Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Bai Dinh Pagoda and the Trang An complex.
A huge buffet lunch was included too in the centre of Tam Coc.
I recommend taking this tour (there were 12 people in total), and it covered all the key sites. While I felt we had too little time at some stops, overall, it is a great way to see the best of Tam Coc and Ninh Binh.
Make sure to book a place on the tour right now.
Some other tickets and tours to consider are the Ninh Binh Bike & Boat Tour and Hoa Lu, Bai Dinh, Trang An, & Mua Cave Tour – all great options with trusted guides and reviews.
Don’t go abroad without comprehensive travel insurance. I have used and trust Safety Wing.
Conclusion
Visiting Hang Múa Cave and the viewpoint was something I looked forward to for ages, and it delivered, and then some.
Make sure you check out Hang Mua Ecolodge as a great place to stay close by. It looks special!
What surprised me most was how it lived up to my expectations, and even surpassed them. The views were fantastic.
Sure, it was not easy getting up to 500 steps, but taking breaks and drinking water along the way helped. Expect it to be packed later in the day, and to line up to reach the very summit. It is not easy, but it is well worth the time.
I recommend doing a tour to see many of the best sites around Ninh Binh and maximise your time.

FAQs
Is Hang Mua Worth Visiting?
Hang Mua Cave is a wonderful place to explore in Ninh Binh. Many people consider it the best thing to do in the area. While I loved the Trang An complex and Bich Dong Pagoda, this was easily my favourite thing to see. It is easy to get there via a tour, bike, or Grab, and while it is a challenge to climb all the steps, the views from the top, and from my drone, made it worth it.
Is It Better To Go To Mua Cave In The Morning Or Afternoon?
In my experience, it is better to go in the afternoon. While the crowds will be bigger, you will appreciate the changing colour of the sky, and as the sun shines across the Dragon Hill and the limestone cliffs all around. Choose what you prefer, but for me, the afternoon is better.
Is Mua Cave An Actual Cave?
Yes, there is a cave, but to be honest, nobody really cares about it. The 360 views from Dragon Hill over the amazing limestone cliffs are what make Hang Mua Cave an essential stop on a Ninh Binh itinerary. The cave is to the left of the stairs before you climb, and it is only mildly impressive compared to the trek and views above.
