Is Ninh Binh worth visiting? That’s the question bouncing around your head as you plan your Vietnam trip, isn’t it? You’ve got Sapa’s terraced rice fields calling your name, Cat Ba Island promising pristine beaches, and Hoi An’s lantern-lit streets all over Instagram. With limited time and so many incredible places competing for a spot on your itinerary, you need to know whether Ninh Binh deserves those precious days.

Here’s what most travellers worry about. Is Ninh Binh just endless hiking? Will you be bored after a day? Should you skip it entirely and head straight to the beach?

I spent 10 days in Ninh Binh, and honestly, I didn’t want to leave. This place is famous for its dramatic limestone karst landscapes that rise from emerald rice paddies like something from a fantasy film. It’s Vietnam’s answer to Halong Bay, but on land, and without the tourist crowds crushing your experience.

The region sits just one hour 20 minutes from Hanoi by minivan, making it ridiculously easy to reach. Yet somehow, it still feels worlds away from the capital’s chaos.

Picture this. I’m sitting on a rooftop bar as the sun melts behind those ancient limestone cliffs, casting everything in shades of gold and amber. The rice fields below shimmer, a few water buffalo wander home, and there’s this profound quiet that you just don’t find in Vietnam’s busier spots. That moment alone justified my entire visit.

Whether you’re travelling solo and craving some peaceful nature time, or you’re a couple wanting romantic scenery without the package tour vibe, Ninh Binh offers something genuinely special. Yes, there’s nature. Loads of it. But there’s also cycling through villages, floating through caves on bamboo boats, exploring ancient temples, and eating some of the best food you’ll find in northern Vietnam.

Where Is Ninh Binh

Now here’s the confusing part.

Well, kind of. Most people say they visit Ninh Binh when really all the good stuff is in Tam Coc, which is another 7-kilometre drive from Ninh Binh. The train station is in Ninh Binh, so I guess that’s why people say they’ll visit Ninh Binh.

There’s really not much to see in Ninh Binh; most people stay in Tam Coc.

You can visit from Hanoi easily by taking the train, private taxi, or shared minivan as I did. Taking the train lasts about three hours, and a shared minivan or taxi takes an hour and a half at most.

The road is decent, and I didn’t have any issues.

Where To Stay In Ninh Binh?

I stayed at Tam Coc Minh Gia Homestay, and the rooms were spacious with a great shower, comfy bed, and breakfast included.

The centre of Tam Coc was just a couple of minutes’ walk away. I rented my bike from the hotel too, which made life easier. It was perfect for me as a solo traveller, only a few rooms available, so no backpackers partying all night. Couples would love it too, and families with small kids.

What I Loved

The Limestone Cliffs

Limestone cliffs rise throughout the region, and this is what makes Ninh Binh special.

Within the cliffs are caves, viewpoints, rivers, and pagodas that will leave you deeply impressed. Hang Mua Cave is extraordinary. Trang An complex is outstanding, charming, and peaceful. (Read my Trang An Boat Tour Guide).

Sunsets Are Amazing

I witnessed one special sunset in Ninh Binh.

The best was from a rooftop bar called Liberty Hall Tam Coc Hotel & Villa.

The sky changed quickly, and I’d never seen it so orange before. The limestone cliffs bordered the views, which left me speechless, quite literally.

You can see beautiful sunsets from the viewpoints like Hang Mua too, or sit by the paddy fields with a drink in hand as buffalo pass by.

Tours

I did some amazing tours that let me see lots of the best bits of Ninh Binh and Tam Coc altogether.

I joined this group tour, which included Bai Dinh Pagoda, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Hang Mua, and Trang An. To be fair, these are all the best things to do and see in Ninh Binh and Tam Coc.

The tour was well organised and included a huge buffet lunch in the heart of Tam Coc beside the river.

What Disappointed Me

I Got Sick From Dodgy Cocktails

I don’t recommend drinking any cocktails from BUS-PUB LITTLE MONKEY TAM COC. I didn’t go crazy, but for four months afterwards, I didn’t feel the same. And no, I didn’t go crazy and drink all night – I had a handful of drinks and wasn’t the same for months.

In fairness, when the guy serving the drinks added ice with his hand, I knew hygiene was not high on this place’s list.

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital Was A Little Boring

I’ll admit that it’s still one of the best places to go in Ninh Binh and is very historic. But I enjoyed exploring the roads around Hoa Lu more than the site itself.

Rent a bike and visit Duyen Ninh Pagoda – the roads are so peaceful.

Best Time To Visit Ninh Binh

I visited Ninh Binh at the end of July and early August, and this is by no means the best time to go.

The temperature at this time was between 26 and 33 degrees, and I loved it!

For optimal weather, visit in March, April, September, October, or November. You can enjoy hiking and outdoor activities in the sun without the extreme heat of peak summer.

November marks the start of the high season, so expect cooler weather and larger crowds. When I visited in the middle of summer, I had little rain and lots of sunshine. I was thinking to myself, why don’t more people just come now?

The Top Things To Do In Ninh Binh

I made a dedicated post describing in detail the best things to do in Ninh Binh.

If you want a quick overview, I’ll say you cannot miss trekking to Hang Mua Cave, Trang An complex, Hoa Lu, Bai Dinh Pagoda, Bich Dong Pagoda, Thung Nham Ecotourism Zone, Buffalo Cave, and cycling through the small roads around the town and countryside.

These experiences were incredible, and I recommend not skipping them; they were some of the most memorable moments during my three and a half months in Vietnam.

The climb to Hang Mua is tough, especially in the heat, but when I did it, there was thankfully a small makeshift shop halfway up where I could buy some water. Once at the top, find a nice spot to stand and enjoy the 360-degree views.

Bai Dinh Pagoda was fantastic, with its tall stupa overlooking the entire site. The giant bell was impressive too, and walking around all the statues and Buddhas left a lasting impression.

My Conclusion- Is Ninh Binh Worth Visiting?

Yes, I couldn’t promote Ninh Binh any further – it is totally worth a visit.

Ninh Binh is easily worth visiting. I fell for the limestone cliffs, hiking viewpoints like Hang Mua Cave, Trang An complex felt like a dream, and cycling the country roads and discovering places like the Buffalo Cave and Bai Dinh Pagoda made me think about extending my trip.

If you’re travelling solo, you’ll meet loads of backpackers, whether you’re young or older. If you’re travelling as a couple, it’ll have romantic bits like the boat tours, viewpoints and sunsets that will make your heart throb harder.
