Is Ha Long Bay Worth It? My Honest Opinion
My Ha Long Bay Experience Surprised Me
Is Ha Long Bay worth it? I’ll be honest, I wasn’t entirely convinced myself before booking a two-day, one-night tour from Cat Ba Island.
The bay had been on my radar for ages, but with limited time in Vietnam and the hefty price tag staring back at me, I kept wavering. Was it really worth the journey from Hanoi, or would it just feel like an expensive repeat of Cat Ba’s karst landscapes?
Here’s what you actually want to know. The real costs (spoiler alert: they vary wildly). Whether it’s safe for solo travellers. What you’ll actually see beyond the Instagram photos. And most importantly, whether those dramatic limestone cliffs justify the time and money when you could be exploring elsewhere in Vietnam.
You’re weighing up your options, checking your budget, and trying to figure out if this UNESCO World Heritage Site lives up to the hype or if it’s just another tourist trap. You want the honest pros and cons from someone who’s actually been there, not just another glossy travel brochure.
The moment that sold me? Kayaking through an emerald lagoon with a complete stranger, both of us paddling in absolute silence as towering karsts rose around us like ancient sentinels. No engine noise. No crowds. Just the gentle splash of our paddles and the overwhelming sense that some places really do deserve their legendary status.
Whether you’re travelling solo or with your partner, this guide breaks down everything you need to make the call.
I’ll walk you through what worked, what didn’t, and whether Ha Long Bay deserves a spot on your Vietnam itinerary. Read my guide on where to stay in Ha Long Bay.

What Is Ha Long Bay?
Ha Long Bay is a limestone archipelago located in north-east Vietnam.
The name translates to “descending dragon,” and it’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Incredibly, the bay is more than 1,500 square kilometres.
Ha Long Bay is one of those places you dream about visiting, and when you get there, it exceeds your expectations and then some!
In my view, Ha Long Bay is easily worth visiting.

Why I Loved Ha Long Bay
I loved Ha Long Bay because it’s a beautiful natural formation and it’s enormous.
When we left the pier and started to enter the bay, it was so quiet, yet so many limestone cliffs appeared from the water.
Some had greenery growing on them, and others didn’t. Each one looked unique and compelling. I loved sitting on the upper deck of the boat and just watching the landscape change as we slowly went through the bay.
Ti Top Beach was a beautiful, small beach where hundreds of people swam in a cordoned-off area. I imagine this was to protect people from all the boats coming into the pier.
The caves, Surprise Cave and Sung Sot Cave, are extraordinary. 700 metres deep at its peak, walking through here is well worth the tour fee alone.
Lastly, the sunset and sunrise were something I can’t describe, but I’ll try!
I sent up my drone and caught the pink and yellow sky as the light changed. Without the drone, you can take amazing pictures on the boat with the backdrop dotted with amazing limestone cliffs.
Our guide was informative, and the group was so much fun.
Karaoke, squid fishing, kayaking, and trying to find monkeys were all what made this experience truly breathtaking and one I’ll remember fondly forever.

Why I Didn’t Like Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay had lots of rubbish floating around, but it wasn’t as bad as I expected.
After the recent typhoon, I imagine this didn’t help, but seeing large floating plastic items was really off-putting and made me question the whole idea of travelling to these countries for my own enjoyment.
Was I part of the problem? I felt guilty, but that conversation is for another day.
Seeing several boats in the low season made me wonder what the high season would be like. The pressure it puts on locals who try to make a living from the tourism sector.
I’m no expert on the impacts, but it must cause problems for locals.
That said, these are real considerations I had, yet it was overall a wonderful experience with the best hospitality you could ask for from the Vietnamese.
Ha Long Bay also had many boats, and even in the shoulder season, my tour guide told me it was somewhat spoiled by all the boats in such a beautiful location.
If you’re desperate for a more peaceful cruise, consider Lan Ha Bay Cruise or Bai Tu Long Bay 2-Day 1-Night Cruise.
I found the Lan Ha Bay cruise much more peaceful with far fewer travellers around, which can reduce comfort and enjoyment levels.
Despite these points, I still think Ha Long Bay is worth visiting.

Alternative To Ha Long Bay
Cat Ba Island
Let me tell you about Cat Ba Island and Lan Ha Bay.
This is so close to Ha Long Bay that if we had kept going, we could have eventually come to it, just 15 kilometres south.
I did another tour starting at Cai Beo Fishing Village when I stayed on Cat Ba Island, and I’ll be totally straight, it was just as good as Ha Long Bay but without the many tourists.
Sure, it got busy, but nothing compared to Ha Long Bay.
Another great place I visited was Monkey Island, included on the Cat Ba tour, and our boat stopped at Bãi tắm Vạn Bội, where we swam across to the small beach, which looks like the world’s most idyllic tiny beach.
We also kayaked around the lagoons in the area, and sadly, this is where my iPhone got wet and later died. Anyway, worth it for the images and videos.
Flying the drone around the bay was the most fun I’ve had in a long time.

Bai Tu Long National Park
I did not visit Bai Tu Long National Park, but it’s located another 54 kilometres north-east of Ha Long Bay.
If you showed me two pictures of both places, I couldn’t tell the difference.
My point is that Ha Long Bay gets the majority of travellers, whereas Bai Tu Long National Park offers a similar experience, as do Cat Ba Island and Lan Ha Bay.
You can book this Bai Tu Long Bay 2-Day 1-Night Cruise to get the best of both worlds.
Don’t go abroad without comprehensive travel insurance. I have used and trust Safety Wing.
Best Time To Visit Ha Long Bay
The best time to visit Ha Long Bay is during spring and autumn.
While I visited in July, the weather was perfect, warm with no rain.
The typhoon had finished the previous day, so it was plain sailing. I’m not saying July is the best time to go, but for me it worked well.
In spring, you can expect pleasant temperatures and little rain. During my visit, it was very hot and humid, but I love that type of weather. I’m Irish, so I need as much heat and sunshine as I can get.
Price-wise, summer will be more affordable, whereas in peak months, expect higher costs and larger crowds, which will affect your experience.

Getting To Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay is located about two and a half hours’ drive from Hanoi, so you can easily get there, which is where most people come from.
Landing at Hanoi International Airport, you can even take a private taxi straight to Ha Long Bay.
Read my guide about how to get from Hanoi airport to the city centre if you’ll visit Ha Long Bay later on your trip. You can book a private taxi from your hotel, too, if that works better for you.
Another way to visit is to do a day tour from Hanoi. When I was at my hotel reception, I met a group of ladies from Cape Town who were setting out on a day trip to Ha Long Bay. I met them when they came back, and they loved it.
When I booked my two-day, one-night tour, a minivan collected me at the hotel and took me all the way to Cat Ba Island. I stayed first, but most people just go to Ha Long Bay, hop on the ferry, and do the overnight tour or two-night tour.
One girl on my trip did the two-night tour in Ha Long Bay. She told us it involved another day of activities like kayaking, which we had already done on day two, so if you’re happy with one day less, you don’t need the third day on the boat.
You can also take a limousine minivan from Hanoi for more comfort, and it’s very affordable compared to a private taxi.

Conclusion
Ha Long Bay is so worth visiting that it’s at the top of my Vietnam recommendations.
I’ll be honest and say I wasn’t sure if it was worth it and whether it would just be another tourist trap, and depending on when you go, it could look like that. Going in the shoulder season allowed me to get good weather and far fewer crowds, which was great.
The kayaking, caves and swimming were all fun too, and the group atmosphere of our medium-sized group of 12 people was special. I recommend going for at least one night to see more and do more, but if you can only afford the day trip, then that’s good too.
I think two days and one night was a good amount of time. Three days could have been too much, but I wouldn’t have been that upset if you told me I had to stay another night in Ha Long Bay.

FAQs
Is Ha Long Bay Worth The Trip?
Yes, Ha Long Bay is totally worth it, especially if you opt for an overnight 2 or 3-day tour. I did the 2 day one night tour, and it was magical from the moment we left the pier until we returned. The landscape is special, and the bay is so big it seemed to go on and on forever. The caves are surreal, and the viewpoints gave me some of the best images and views I’ve ever seen.
How Long Do You Need In Ha Long Bay?
I recommend spending at least one night in Ha Long Bay to make it worth it. When I visited, I did the overnight 2-day tour. It included kayaking, swimming, exploring caves, amazing food, karaoke and trekking to amazing viewpoints overlooking the bay. If you do only a day, you’ll be missing out on some of the great activities in Ha Long Bay, which make it so special.
When To Avoid Ha Long Bay?
It’s best to avoid Ha Long Bay in the typhoon season. When I visited in July, I had missed one of the worst typhoons in recent times, where some boats capsized, and numerous people sadly drowned. You don’t want to be on a boat in Ha Long Bay when the weather becomes dangerously rough. Cancel your trip and don’t leave the pier. The best time to go is spring or autumn for sunnier, drier weather and a good balance of crowds and temperatures.
