My Experience At Hanoi Weekend Night Market
Hanoi’s weekend night market is one of those experiences that sounds simple on paper but hits different when you’re actually there.
You’re probably wondering if it’s actually worth your limited time in Vietnam’s capital. Fair question. I spent a month in Hanoi, and here’s what I learned: yes, but not for the reasons most travel blogs will tell you.
The practical stuff first. The market takes over the Old Quarter streets every weekend night, starting around 7 pm. You can cover it in one hour if you’re efficient, or lose an entire evening if you’re not (both are valid choices). As for what you’ll find? Souvenirs, street food, knock-off sneakers, the usual suspects.
But here’s the thing.
I remember walking down Hang Dao Street on a Thursday afternoon. Motorbikes everywhere. Horns blaring. The standard Hanoi chaos. Then I came back Friday night after they closed the roads to traffic, and it was like stumbling onto the set of The Walking Dead. Same street, completely different universe. Just hundreds of people wandering slowly through spaces that were, 24 hours earlier, a vehicular warzone.
That transformation is what makes it worth your time. Not the stuff you can buy (though the souvenir prices are decent). Not even the food (though there’s plenty). It’s the atmosphere.
If you’re travelling solo or with a partner and you’ve got a free evening, this is where you should spend it. And since you’re already figuring out your Hanoi itinerary and where to base yourself, the weekend market slots in perfectly with other things to do in Hanoi.
Stay somewhere near Hoan Kiem Lake, and you’re a five-minute walk from the action.

How To Get There?
Depending on where you are in the city, you can get there in a couple of ways.
I recommend using Grab, a taxi-hailing service similar to Uber.
You can get a motorbike or a car taxi.
Be aware that when I used a motorbike, Grabs many times, the driver gave me a helmet that wasn’t fit for the purpose. The strap was loose and would come right off, so be prepared to reject the driver if that’s the case.
Cars are much safer but take significantly longer, especially at weekends when the city comes alive, especially at night in Hanoi.
If you’re close by and are too tired to walk, I recommend taking a cyclo.
With cyclos, you sit on a large seat at the front of the bike, and you’ll find them all over the Old Quarter on the north-east side of Hoan Kiem Lake.

Are Night Markets In Vietnam Safe?
From my experience, night markets are generally safe in Vietnam.
I’ve visited several in Hanoi, Sapa Town, Hoi An, Cat Ba Island, and Da Nang. Not once did I witness any trouble or conflict. That said, I’d advise keeping an eye on your belongings whenever you’re in large crowds.
Make sure valuables are secure and close to you.
Things can be stolen anywhere in the world, so it’s best to sort yourself out before entering busy areas.

Pricing
The first price usually isn’t the right price.
But bear in mind, what seems like small money to you could be a lot to other people. If you try and bargain down to nothing and the vendor is desperate, you might not be helping them.
Instead, if you can afford it, why not pay a couple more pounds and make somebody’s day?
Quality Of Items
You can be lucky or unlucky, in my experience.
Before, when I bought some items, they lasted for years when abroad. Sometimes, they don’t last the day. It’s best to check a lot of the items available and see if there are any blemishes or issues with the quality.
If there are, pick a better-looking one or point out the damage to the seller.
Card Or Cash
In Hanoi, I always carried cash.
You should too, especially on weekend night market. Vendors rarely accept cards, and having small notes means you can pay the exact amount, which is particularly helpful if you’re on a budget.
Sometimes when travelling, taxi drivers or vendors haven’t had change when I’ve paid for something, so they’ve ended up with a bit extra.
It won’t be huge money, but it’s worth knowing if you’re budgeting carefully.
Market Experience
It’s so much fun.
I’ve come to find myself exploring Southeast Asian markets with the excitement of a child at Christmas. Lights, cameras, and atmosphere. Be prepared to get close to people. When it’s busiest, the roads get crammed, and you need to watch where you step and for oncomers.
No big deal, just a busy place.
Eating At The Night Market
When I visited the market, there were food stalls close to the Shark Jaw building.
Think seafood, chicken skewers, kebabs, sausages on a stick, tornado potatoes, and many more. You won’t be paying more than 20,000 Vietnamese dong per skewer – maybe cheaper than that. Incredible taste for very little cost.

Electronics
After spending almost two years travelling full-time in Asia, I’ve come to see how night markets love selling electronics.
However, I would always stick to electronics stores. Why? Because you get a receipt and can return it without issue, whereas night markets are less likely to offer that. If you’re buying something pricey, I’d suggest playing it safe.
But if it’s a cheaper item and you need it right on the spot, then maybe go for it, just know some of these markets have a reputation for dodgy electronics quality.

What To Buy At The Market?
At Hanoi’s weekend market, you can find pretty much anything you can think of.
From perfume to food, clothes to jewellery, hats to toys and shoes. When I walked through the market, I was surprised by how long it went on for.
For hundreds of metres, what was once a busy street with bikes and cars is now filled with stalls, vendors, and tourists looking to pick up a bargain.
The market was always lively, which I loved. Vendors would try to lure you in with offers and discounts for the best price.

My Experience At Hanoi Weekend Night Market
Every Friday after finishing blogging and making videos, I would head to Hoan Kiem Lake.
The first weekend in Hanoi, I came right upon the night market in full flow. People covered every inch of the narrow street, maybe 10 metres wide.
Walking through the street was fun. People stopped all over, chatting with sellers and seeing what they wanted to bring back home.
The smell of the food stalls really caught my attention, and it’s usually one of the most popular parts of the market. Sausages and skewered meats were terrific. Cheap, tasty and fun.
The market bisects the centre of the Old Quarter, and I found people drinking, locals happily working, and families with kids smiling as they went.
When I visited the market numerous times, I didn’t stay more than half an hour.
But if you’re doing a big shop or looking to kill time, you could spend a couple of hours going around seeing what’s on offer.

What To See Close To The Market
Because of its central location, you can visit some of the best sites in Hanoi.
These include:
- Hỏa Lò Prison: an incredible experience to see how inmates were kept in awful conditions.
- Hoàn Kiếm Lake: walk around the lake in around thirty minutes to enjoy Hanoi’s nature.
- Ngọc Sơn Temple: a beautiful temple in the middle of Hoàn Kiếm Lake. Worth a visit!
- French Quarter: amazing architecture and cafés to see. Includes the Opera House.
- Beer Street: want to party? This is the place to go, with endless bars and clubs.
- Đồng Xuân Market: if you want to compare it with another one of Hanoi’s markets.

From my experience in Hanoi, the weekend night market is a fun and atmospheric experience, one I’d recommend travellers see at least once.
It’s a similar but different vibe to Ho Chi Minh City in the south, but I loved both these cities’ markets so much!
It doesn’t take up too much time and can be combined with a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, before or after visiting one of the Old Quarter’s fantastic coffee shops or sky bars.
