There is loads to do at night in Hanoi. When the sun goes down, Hanoi comes to life in ways that’ll completely change how you see this city.
Will you be stuck in your room with nothing to do after dark?
Not a chance.
I’ll never forget the first time I watched an entire road close down at 7.00 pm, only to transform into something completely different within minutes. One moment, motorbikes everywhere. The next? Stalls selling everything from grilled squid to knock-off trainers stretched as far as you could see.
The Hanoi weekend night market is particularly mad. Seeing a busy thoroughfare convert into an equally busy market feels like watching a magic trick you can’t quite work out. How do they set up so fast? Where do all the vehicles go? You just have to experience it.
Whether you’re travelling solo and want to meet people over street food, or you’re here with your partner looking for romantic spots that don’t involve fighting through daytime crowds, nighttime Hanoi has something for you. The city shifts gears after sunset, and honestly, some of the best experiences only happen once it’s dark.

Do A Cycling Tour
Hanoi looks completely different at night.
The lights make it look special, plenty of neon and bright lights flicker in the streets. This is the perfect way to hop on a bike or trishaw and take a tour around the city to see what’s happening.
Tours are very affordable ($5.00), so it’s a fun way to be taken around. Don’t forget to tip, as it’s hard work!
I tried a trishaw during the day, and it was so comfortable and leisurely. You’ll find them really close to the Old Quarter, especially around the lake and water puppet theatre. They’ll try to push you in, and at least once, go and try it.

Explore The Rooftop Bars
I loved Hanoi’s rooftop bars so much that I even made a dedicated post about the best ones.
For me, The Luxe Bar was special, overlooking Hoan Kiem Lake. I also have to mention Cloud Sky Bar, Solar Sky Bar and Mian Sky Bar. All great options with amazing cocktails and views of the city.
When I visited, I was blown away by how peaceful these bars were, even at peak hours.
Only a handful of people joined me, but it made it feel like a hidden activity to do at night in Hanoi, though it’s not so secret.
Chill music, charismatic bartenders, and comfy seats make for a really fun thing to do in Hanoi at night.
The lights are exciting to see at night compared to the day.

Visit Hanoi Weekend Night Market
Hanoi Weekend Night Market is incredible, not only because of its sheer size and scale, but because during the day it’s just a busy street in the heart of Hanoi.
However, when the sun goes down, the street becomes a hive of people looking for great deals on souvenirs, clothes and food.
When I visited in June and July, I was shocked to see that the cars had vanished and the vendors packed the street, leaving only a narrow path on both sides for people to walk along.
The street feels like it never ends, but here you can get amazing street food and some of the best things to eat in Hanoi.

Experience Thang Long Water Puppet
Most people are eager to see a Thang Long Water Puppet show.
Located right beside Hoan Kiem Lake, the queues were so long when I visited that I had to wait ages to come back for a show.
I recommend buying your ticket well in advance to make sure you can fit it in and not miss out.
Puppet shows are synonymous with Vietnam, and it’s easily one of the fun things to do at night.

Party On Beer Street
Beer Street is, let’s say, an experience.
When I walked through the street on one of my first nights, every single bar had somebody trying to lure me in, even physically.
I didn’t mind it at first, but it can get annoying after the 10th time.
The street is literally packed with bars and loud music, so party-goers will love it here. You can eat, dance, and drink, and it’s all done within a confined space.
It’s truly the heart of Hanoi’s nightlife.

Eat Street Food
Like Hanoi Weekend Night Market or loads of other streets in the city, you’ll find vendors selling street food.
It can be tasty food you’ve eaten before and very affordable, so I recommend you try it at least once.
Don’t be afraid. Sometimes street food gets a bad rap, but you can have some of the safest meals of your trip to Hanoi.
Whether you eat pho, bun cha, skewered meats or banh mi, you’ll fall for Vietnamese cuisine after the first night.
Sure, sometimes it doesn’t work out, but at least you’ll be able to say you tried the street food in Hanoi.

Try Some Of Hanoi’s Craft Beers
Craft beer is found all over the city.
I visited Tony Vu Brewing 1- Local Craft Beer and sat in the street on a plastic stool with a drink, listening to Hanoi and watching all that happens.
There are so many options to choose from in the same area and around the city that it can be overwhelming, but it’s worth trying a few of Hanoi’s craft beers when you visit, especially at night.
Hanoi Craft beers, The Balcony Beer and HaNoi Hops Local Craft Beer Restaurant are some good options to consider, all in the old quarter.

Get A Foot Massage
When you land in Hanoi Old Quarter, you’ll see just how many massage parlours there are.
When I stayed a month in Hanoi and got many massages, I noticed they stay open until midnight, so this can be a relaxing way to spend an hour at night in Hanoi.
You can pay between 200,000 and 350,000 VND for a foot, back, or body massage, so after exploring the city during the day and being exhausted from the heat, it’s a perfect nighttime activity.

See A Street Performance
There are many live musical street performers in Hanoi, so you’ll be spoiled for choice.
When I visited, I saw a couple with guitars, a group of locals playing traditional Vietnamese songs, and full live rock performances with huge crowds all around Hòan Kiem Lake.
Grab a beer, ice cream or coffee (read my guide to the best coffee in Hanoi) and stand there and listen. Vietnamese people are incredibly musically talented, so you’ll be in for a treat no matter the genre.
Don’t forget there’s a huge karaoke culture in Vietnam, and you can hear people perform on the streets or around the old quarter, too.

Train Street is a popular spot to visit, especially at night.

While I visited during the day, I know many people love the neon lights and busy atmosphere at night. It’s a fun place to see, and when the train passes, it’s actually pretty exciting.
There are many places to have a beer or a coconut, so you’ll have to think about that, but it’s a really enjoyable thing to do at night.

Explore Hoan Kiem Lake
Hoan Kiem Lake comes to life at night.
Seeing the Turtle Tower and Bridge lit up is magical, and you know you’re in Hanoi and nowhere else.
When I stayed in the city, I loved stopping by at random times of the day. Morning, afternoon, night, each brought something different. I always found groups of elderly people exercising together, whether running or doing group dances.
It was brilliant to see. Again, if you’re lucky, live music performances will be found.
I recommend you walk around at a leisurely pace with a coffee from The Note Coffee or Cafe Dinh (located close to the north side of the lake) and enjoy the snacks from local vendors and chill.
See St. Joseph’s Cathedral
St. Joseph’s Cathedral is a beautiful place, a few minutes’ walk from the lake.
I suggest you visit both one after another and enjoy the beauty of the cathedral at night.
A beautiful yellow light illuminates the church, and it looks incredible from the ground below. I recommend getting a coffee at Trà chanh nhà thờ to the side of the church, and there will be plenty of tourists taking photos there, so be prepared for large crowds.
Still, it’s one of the fun things to do in Hanoi at night without question.

Is Hanoi Safe At Night?
I found Hanoi to be very safe to travel as a solo male.
I didn’t see any problems overall.
No fighting, crime, or antisocial behaviour.
As usual, watch your bags when wandering through busy areas. Lock them if possible, and carry a wallet in a waist bag for extra security.
I would say Hanoi at night is totally safe during my month’s stay in the city.

Final Thoughts/Conclusion
I’ve spent one month in Hanoi, where I explored the nightlife scene most evenings.
My typical night costs between $15.00 and $30.00, covering a massage, dinner, drinks at rooftop bars, and street food snacks wandering back through the Old Quarter.
One of my favourite nights involved drinks at a rooftop bar whilst watching a live rock band perform below on the street. The energy was brilliant, and it perfectly captured what makes Hanoi’s nights so special.
Here’s what I learned the hard way: don’t leave it too late to head out. The weekend night market starts packing up around 10:30 PM, live music venues stop playing by 11:00 PM due to curfew rules, and you’ll miss the best atmosphere if you wait until midnight to explore.
Travelling solo made it easy to hop between spots without coordination, and I met other travellers at Beer Street and the rooftop bars almost every night.

Is There A Curfew In Hanoi At 11pm?
Businesses face an 11:00 PM curfew for live music, but visitors can freely walk the streets all night. Beer Street, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the Old Quarter remain active until 2:00 AM with street vendors, late-night eateries, and bars operating past midnight. Certain clubs and karaoke bars stay open until 3:00 AM or 4:00 AM on weekends. Taxis and Grab operate 24 hours. The weekend night market officially closes at 11:00 PM, though some stalls pack up earlier around 10:30 PM.
