Here’s the thing most people don’t tell you: not all Vietnamese food is vegan, but there are loads of options for vegans in Hanoi. The Buddhist influence means plant-based eating is woven into the city’s food culture in a way that just doesn’t exist in most places.
When I first landed in Hanoi, I had the same worries you probably have right now. I’m not even vegan, but I wanted to eat clean for part of my trip. I kept thinking: how do I know if there’s fish sauce in this? Can I trust what restaurants tell me? Where the hell do I even start looking?
Those first couple of days, I played it safe. Stuck to the obvious vegetarian places. Pointed at the menus nervously. But then I figured out the system.
Turns out Hanoi has dedicated vegan restaurants. Once you know where to look, you’ll be eating some of the best food of your life.

Ivegan is a modern place to eat vegan food in Hanoi.
The café really stood out on the corner of the street with its white exterior and black text. It looked classy in my eyes.
After ordering at the door as you walk in, you can also order from the window outside and eat there. I decided to go upstairs for the view of the street.
When I got to the second floor, there were only a couple of people working on their laptops. The room is bright with lots of glass.
You can have amazing smoothie bowls, like the Green Ninja or Super Chai, made with organic ingredients. If you have a sweet tooth, you can opt for a chocolate brownie or a chocolate ball.
When I visited, the coconuts were so refreshing. The bright room and view of the street made it feel like a great place to visit.
You can add extras to your dish like falafel, hummus, or tahini, or opt for a love mug, which, of course, has vegan options included.
This place easily has some of the best vegan food in Hanoi.

Met Restaurant
Another great restaurant in Hanoi offering vegan food is Met Restaurant.
Yes, it’s a chain and doesn’t have the family feel of some of Hanoi’s other great restaurants, but for vegans it’s a no-brainer.
When I visited, I was impressed with the staff and, of course, the food.
They even have a vegan bun cha, for God’s sake! Bun cha is an incredible Vietnamese dish that even President Barack Obama had to try on his visit to Hanoi.
Other vegan options include pumpkin soup and vegan pancakes. There are different locations throughout Hanoi, so depending on which part of the city you stay in, there’ll likely be one close by, though most are in the Old Quarter.
It’s good to know, as a vegan, that there are great options before you leave!

Bún Chả Que Tre
This place offers excellent vegan and vegetarian options.
When I visited, there were only a few people inside, and the food? Incredible. I opted for the fried tofu with rice and sauce, plus a fresh salad on the side.
They have fantastic fresh fruit juices here, so I recommend those as well.
There’s a separate vegetarian menu that also includes options for vegans, and if that vegetarian food is anything to go by, you’re in for a treat!

AMY Indian Restaurant – Pure Vegetarian & Jain Food
This was one of the best Indian restaurants in Hanoi, and it has loads of vegan options.
When I visited, I always went for a curry of some style. The sauce is incredible, thick, creamy and flavoursome. Everything an Indian curry should be.
You can have the spice to taste, of course.
Many people online state this is the best Indian vegan food in the city. While I ate at a number of Indian restaurants, I can’t complain about the quality, portion sizes and price.
The staff were attentive when I arrived, and the location is great, about a fifteen-minute walk to Hoan Kiem Lake. While the food is heavy, it’s nice to walk off the heaviness around the lake at night.
I recommend the shahi paneer or butter masala along with sweet lassi and jeera rice.
You can expect to pay 135,000 Vietnamese dong for shahi paneer, but with its chunks of cheese, it’s worth it!

A little further out from Hoan Kiem Lake and westwards into the city is The Veg – organic vego & tea.
This vegetarian restaurant has many vegan options.
You can even get vegan homemade pizza if you miss the taste of home. Options include Pad Thai, smoothie bowls, meatballs and panini, so the choice is diverse.
A popular dish here is the vegan beetroot soup. The menu is clearly marked, so you know what’s vegan and can spot other allergies too.
It’s an amazing option with fresh and organic plant-based dishes.
If you’re a vegan wanting options in Hanoi, then The Veg – organic vego & tea is a good place to consider.

Lá Studio
Located beside West Lake, Lá Studio is a great place for vegans should consider when visiting Hanoi.
Sure, you may need to take a Grab to get there if you’re staying in the Old Quarter, but it’s an easy way to travel around the city.
So what are the options here? Well, not just vegetarian food, but smoothie bowls, sandwiches, salad and soup, so really think of lunch when you hear Lá Studio.
The tempeh bagel is very popular here and costs 65,000 Vietnamese dong. If you want a lighter lunch, the hummus salad costs 70,000 Vietnamese dong.
I recommend exploring Phủ Tây Hồ, a little over a kilometre away and on the edge of the lake, for a peaceful experience after you have eaten. Or before, to work up an appetite.
When I visited, locals were arriving to meditate and pray here.
Lá Studio isn’t fancy, but its vegan food is vibrantly coloured and healthy, making it a great choice for vegans who may be outside of the Old Quarter.

Hẻm Vegan
Hẻm Vegan is located close to Hoan Kiem Lake and the French Quarter, just around the corner from Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre.
This makes it super convenient when you’re exploring the Hanoi weekend night market and want food afterwards. Though you do have to walk through a narrow alley to get there.
The restaurant may not be the fanciest inside, but you can get a huge bowl of authentic vegan food.
Fresh spring rolls will set you back 90,000 Vietnamese dong, and pho costs 70,000 Vietnamese dong. If you’re feeling adventurous or visiting as a couple, maybe a vegan hot pot could be for you.
Even on Friday or Saturday nights, you can find this place empty, but that doesn’t mean the food is bad.
It’s one of Hanoi’s best vegan restaurants, and the reviews are online to prove it.

I loved how fresh Vietnamese food is in general, but it’s great to know that vegans can come to the capital of Vietnam and have some solid options for their trip. Wherever I ate in Hanoi, whether at a vegan restaurant or any eatery, there was no need to reserve a place.
Now, I was travelling solo, so if you’re a large group or a couple and it’s peak time in the Old Quarter, I recommend ringing ahead and asking the restaurant about their policy.
